The Seven Deadly Sins - Sloth
[14 September 2008]
Alberto Santos-Dumont will be unknown to many of you but he is someone that has influenced your life. He was born in Brazil but in 1891 at the age of 18 he moved to France where one of his great passions was flying. One of the realities was that he spent more time crashing than flying but Alberto was someone of amazing determination. He initially designed hydrogen filled balloons called dirigibles and which he would fly for short distances around Paris. He would often delight crowds by arriving uninvited and unannounced at official functions and becoming the star of the show. >>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Lust
[31 August 2008]
A little boy returning home from his first day at school asked his mother, “what is sex?” His mother had prepared herself for this question and gave a simple but detailed answer that she had rehearsed. She even included God in her answer which she was particularly pleased about. When she had finished the young lad produced an enrollment form which he had brought home from school and said, “yes, but how am I going to get all that into this one little square?”>>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Greed
[24 August 2008]
Whenever I take a trip into Aranui or some of the poorer suburbs of our town I know I’m rich. I pass by people whose clothing tells me they haven’t been in a clothes shop for months and their shoes or lack of shoes tell me they don’t spend much money on these luxuries. The homes see are basic, and the cars all show signs of wear and tear.>>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Gluttony
[17 August 2008]
Pride, anger, envy, greed, lust, sloth, and gluttony – the seven deadly sins.  I’m not quite sure how gluttony made it into the list.  I do know that in the early church there was a strong ascetic movement that stressed that people needed to give up pleasures of life or the sins of the flesh as they called them.  Remember John the Baptist who took off into the desert where he wore simple clothing and ate things like locusts and wild honey.  For some this was considered an ideal and eating too much became a serious sin.  However when the seven deadly sins were put together in the middle ages gluttony almost didn’t make the list. >>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Anger
[10 August 2008]
The bill has an odd amount on it so we call the number shown to find out more. A voice answers telling us there is no operator available right now to take our call but if we hold the line our call will be answered shortly. The music comes on which is not quite our sort of music. Four minutes later a voice comes on again telling us that we are very important but there is no operator available to take our call right now. Please hold and an operator will be with you shortly. There is more music and our fingers tap the bench in front of us, but they are not tapping in time to the music.>>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Envy
[3 August 2008]
Of the seven deadly sins envy is the odd one because of all the seven sins it is the one that produces no pleasure. Others like over eating, letting go of pent up anger, enjoying the profits of greed, giving in to lust, or just having a slothful lie in, have an element of pleasure. Envy, longing for what someone else has, is a sad sin. Thomas Aquinas the medieval scholar defined envy as sadness at the happiness or glory of another.>>>more

The Seven Deadly Sins - Pride
[26 July 2008]
The word sin used to be a word that would make people sit up and take notice. It used to have an effect on people like the word cancer does today. There was something dangerous and dreadful about it. To call something sinful these days is to invite the comment that it’s naughty but nice, so we talk of eating a large piece of chocolate cake as sinful, or of pampering ourselves in some way as a sinful indulgence. Sin has been domesticated and changed from a rotweiller into a poodle>>>more

The Spiritual Practice of Worship
[13 July 2008]
We’ve been looking at spiritual practices over the last few Sundays - discerning Gods voice or leading, healing, hospitality, telling our story, contemplation and listening to God in the silence, seeking justice and the kingdom of God. I’ve been gently hammering the theme that we need to consciously nurture these practices, and churches that do so will find the living presence of God becoming more apparent and real. Churches where the living presence of God is apparent and real have a future. >>>more
